For Participants
What do I do with my data?
Many projects funded by the Northeast Consortium investigate species that are a managed fishery in the Gulf of Maine. Data from these projects may provide crucial information to management, increasing the likelihood that regulations will be set at appropriate levels. We would like to help scientists involved in these projects get their results onto the right person's desk, so that the information can be put to good use. Additionally, data are added to the Fisheries and Ocean Data Management System, which allows internet access to an interactive, searchable archive of data from Consortium-funded research. This site has a clear data acknowledgment policy which in summary, states that the data are intended for scholarly use by the academic, management, industry and scientific community, with the express understanding that any such use will properly acknowledge the originating investigator.
Northeast Consortium projects are publicly funded, and therefore the data gathered for the project must be made publicly available. We respect the desires of researchers who would like to refrain from submitting data until it has been published, and allow a three year grace period from the collection date for this purpose. If other data are gathered which is not critical to the publication, we strongly encourage researchers to make it available at the earliest convenience. If you have a website which allows access to project data, we can add a link to this site in our database.
