Research Funding
Cooperative Research Awards
The majority of Northeast Consortium funding goes to Cooperative Research Awards that are usually for one or two years' duration. Projects lasting three years are acceptable if justified. Projects must include as key participants both one or more scientists ( e.g., faculty or staff members at institutions of higher learning or accredited research facilities, or employees of state or federal programs or agencies) and one or more commercial fishermen. The Northeast Consortium encourages projects that allow and foster broad participation among scientists and fishermen.
Project Development Awards
At the encouragement of the Advisory Committee, the Northeast Consortium established a Project Development award program in FY2001. Up to $25,000 per project can be used to test the feasibility of an idea, try out new gear, or otherwise lay the groundwork for future research. Project development awards are granted through an RFP and panel review process that occurs later in the year than the full award process.
